WAUSAU – After reading an article detailing the harsh economic impacts that local businesses were facing, particularly in the Wausau River District, Mellissa Gilbert wanted to take action.

As a runner, Gilbert decided to organize a virtual run to raise money for these businesses.  Gilbert created the River Runs Wild Virtual run/walk for people to have a local cause to rally around while staying fit.

“After seeing Blake discuss how hard this pandemic hit local businesses in the River District, I knew there had to be a way to help out. With growing up in the area and having a passion for running, holding a virtual run/walk was the perfect answer! It is a way to help out businesses that are suffering while also creating a fun way to get active! I am so happy to be collaborating with IRONBULL. Andrea Larson has been immensely helpful with getting this idea in motion!” said Gilbert.

The virtual run offers the flexibility to participate anywhere and at anytime.  So, for those who are not morning people, miles can be traveled later in the day.  And if the weather is not cooperating, participants can postpone to the next day.  Participants may complete their mileage on the roads, trails or even on a treadmill.  Even though the idea and support is surrounding the River District in Wausau runners from all over are invited to participate.

The River Runs Wild event also allows participants to break up their distance, meaning they do not need to cover the entire distance in a single outing.  And for those striving to improve their fitness, participants may commit to a four-week challenge which steps up the mileage each week.

All net proceeds go directly to programs that assist our small, locally-owned businesses in partnership with the Wausau River District.

“Having community members like Melissa is why Wausau is such a great place to live work and play.” said Blake Opal-Wahoske, executive director of the Wausau River District. “She recognized a problem and was quick to act to help our local small business community.  The Wausau River District has always been a place for people to come together, and having community support further solidifies the importance of the success of our downtown and river west neighborhood.”
