COVID-19 puts Rib Mountain Adventure Challenge on hold; organizers offer virtual version

RIB MOUNTAIN (Keith Uhlig, Wausau Daily Herald) – COVID-19 and Safer at Home efforts to overcome its spread have forced the cancellation of central Wisconsin's adventure race.

The sixth annual Rib Mountain Adventure Challenge, originally scheduled for May 23, consists of teams of three endurance athletes competing in three disciplines: orienteering and running, mountain biking and paddling canoes. But the extension of Safer at Home restrictions meant that the event's directors, the husband-and-wife team of Tim Buchholz and Anna Nummelin of Rib Mountain, had to scrap the in-person event. About 300 participants participated last year, Buchholz said.

In its place, Buchholz and Nummelin created the Virtual Adventure Challenge, in which athletes can participate on their own from "anywhere in the world," according to a press release. So far, about 100 people so have signed up for the virtual event.
